Paul Storr Sterling Silver Entrée Dish and Cover. Hallmarked London 1814, decorated with gadrooned borders & a shell motif handle, inscribed - Presented by The Duchess Del Infantado to Commander James Robert Dalton RN. W1736g (total). Commander James Robert Dalton (1784-1864). Commanded HMS Spitfire from 28/7/1814 to 28/5/1815. He retired with the rank of Captain on 10/9/1840. According to Parliamentary Papers House of Commons and Command Vol 70 p.567 printed 23/11/1814 & reprinted 3/5/1920, he was paid £22.17.2 for conveying The Duchess del Infantado & her suite from Portsmouth to Bilboa at the conclusion of the Peninsular War. The Duchess del Infantado was the wife of the 13th Duke de Infantado, Pedro de Alcantara Alvarez de Toledo (1768-1841), Spanish Politician & general who joined forces with the British under Sir John Moore & later corresponded with the Duke of Wellington. She lived in Engand for the duration of the Peninsular War. The silver was inherited by George Cleghorn (1831-1914), of Weens, Hawick, Scotland, whose mother Maria Catherine Dalton (1797-1866) was a sister of Captain Dalton. In accordance with Captain Dalton's will, George Cleghorn changed his name by Royal Licence to Tancred on 8/9/1885 & the silverware was then inherited by his son George Harry Lumsden Tancred (1863-1935), his grandson Harry Lumsden Tancred (1908-1993) & his great grandson Peter Lumsden Tancred (1936-2017).
